Simple ULEZ Cost Calculator For 2026

Advanced options

Rule of thumb: petrol cars from ~2006 (Euro 4) and diesels from ~Sept 2015 (Euro 6) are compliant: but ALWAYS check your exact plate on TfL's checker, as some earlier cars pass and some later ones don't. Other cities run their own Clean Air Zones with different rates and rules (some don't charge private cars at all): the same maths applies with their numbers. Forgetting to pay turns GBP 12.50 into a GBP 90+ penalty: auto-pay exists for a reason.

What The ULEZ Cost Calculator Works Out

  • Per month: days driven in the zone multiplied by the daily charge. GBP 12.50 a day across a twelve-day driving month is GBP 150. Charges apply per calendar day, with midnight-crossing implications for night workers.
  • Per year: the monthly figure multiplied by 12, an GBP 1,800 year for that twelve-day pattern. Compliant vehicles (petrol Euro 4, roughly 2006 on; diesel Euro 6, roughly September 2015 on) pay nothing, but plate-level exceptions run in both directions, so TfL's checker is the authority.
  • The swap maths: three years of charges is the price of a compliant used car that then costs nothing to drive in the zone. That rolling incentive is precisely the policy's mechanism.
  • Penalties for forgotten days (advanced): each unpaid day becomes a GBP 180 penalty charge notice, GBP 90 if paid within 14 days. Payment windows close at midnight on the third day after travel, and memory is not a compliance strategy: auto-pay exists for a reason.
  • Congestion Charge on top (advanced): a non-compliant car in central London pays both charges on the same day, about GBP 27.50. Enter the days a month you are also inside the Congestion Charge zone.
  • All-in per year (advanced): ULEZ charges, penalties and Congestion Charge together, which is the figure to set against public transport or a different car.
  • Compliant car pays back in (advanced): the price gap between your car and a compliant replacement divided by the annual charges and penalties you would avoid. Leave the gap at zero to use three years of charges; the Congestion Charge still applies after a swap, so it is excluded from the payback.
  • Public transport instead (advanced): a daily fare multiplied by your zone days and 12 months, compared with the all-in zone charges before fuel and parking. Mode shift is where the zone's design quietly points.
  • Cumulative table (advanced): keep paying versus swap now, year by year over your horizon. Compliant small petrols carry a measurable ULEZ premium and older diesels a matching discount that makes them bargains everywhere the zone is not; Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield and other Clean Air Zones use their own classes and rates, several exempting private cars entirely.
