Advanced options
Apply ONLINE: the paper form costs meaningfully more for the identical passport. Child passports last 5 years not 10 (the ambush in family budgeting: two kids = a passport renewal somewhere most years). The post-Brexit EU rules that catch people: issued within the last 10 years on the DAY OF ENTRY, and 3+ months validity beyond your planned departure from the EU: check both before booking, not before flying. Fast Track and Premium services cost sharply more: the standard service's real-world turnaround is usually fine OUTSIDE the pre-summer surge: renew in autumn/winter.
What The Passport Cost Calculator Works Out
- Family total: adult passports x the adult online fee plus child passports x the child online fee. At GBP 94.50 and GBP 61.50 the standard family of four pays about GBP 312 for a full refresh.
- Amortised honestly: the adult fee spread over 120 months of validity and the child fee over 60. An adult passport costs under 80p a month, the cheapest travel document on the site by the day and the most expensive to find expired at check-in.
- The traps: for Schengen travel a passport must have been issued within ten years on the day of entry and carry three months' validity beyond your departure from the EU; airlines apply both tests at check-in. Up to nine months of remaining adult validity carries over on early renewal, so punctuality wastes little.
- Application route (advanced): the paper form costs GBP 12.50 more per passport than applying online for the identical document, and takes longer.
- Service speed (advanced): 1 week Fast Track adds about GBP 83.50 per passport and the same-day Online Premium service about GBP 127.50 for adult renewals (children cannot use Premium, so they are priced on Fast Track). The standard service is usually fine outside the pre-summer surge, so renew in autumn or winter.
- Frequent-traveller passports (advanced): the 54-page version costs GBP 13 more than the standard 34 pages and suits anyone collecting full-page visas.
- Photos, postage and extras (advanced): a supermarket booth or compliant phone-photo service runs GBP 5 to GBP 15 per person, and courier or travel costs apply to Premium appointments and paper applications. Third-party checking websites charge for free GOV.UK forms and are never worth it.
- Grand total, all-in (advanced): the family total plus surcharges plus extras, with the per-passport figure underneath.
- Passport spend over the horizon (advanced): how many applications the household faces over your chosen number of years (adults every ten, children every five) and what they cost at today's prices. Two children mean a renewal somewhere most years, which is the ambush in family budgeting.
