UK lounges: GBP 25-45 pre-booked
meal + drinks + coffee at airport prices
Advanced options
The fair sum isn't GBP 32 vs GBP 0: it's GBP 32 vs the airport meal, pints and coffees you'd buy anyway at terminal prices: for many travellers the true premium is a tenner. Book AHEAD (walk-up prices run GBP 5-15 higher and busy lounges close to walk-ups entirely): time your entry (most cap you at 3 hours): and check your bank account/packaged account perks: lounge access hides in premium accounts and some travel insurance add-ons people already pay for.
What The Airport Lounge Calculator Works Out
- True lounge premium: the lounge price minus what you would spend airside anyway, multiplied by the party. UK lounges run GBP 25 to GBP 45 pre-booked, and an airport meal, two drinks and a coffee easily reach GBP 18 a head, so the real premium is often a tenner each.
- What the premium buys: guaranteed seats, included food and bar, quiet, unqueued loos and working space with sockets. It never buys faster security, and a peak-season lounge can be as busy as the concourse, so read recent reviews of the specific lounge.
- When it's worth it: waits of two hours plus, delays, working trips and the treat holiday. The 45-minute connection and the already-fed traveller get little from it.
- Children (advanced): most lounges charge a reduced child rate (GBP 15 to GBP 25) and admit infants free. Children are added at their own price and assumed to eat half an adult's airside spend.
- Walk-up surcharge (advanced): turning up without booking costs GBP 5 to GBP 15 more per person and busy lounges close to walk-ups entirely. Enter it to see what deciding at the airport costs.
- Premium per hour of quiet (advanced): the true premium divided by the hours you will actually be inside. Most lounges cap entry at three hours, so time your arrival back from boarding rather than from reaching the airport.
- Lounge spend per year (advanced): the party's sticker price multiplied by visits a year, which is the number to set against a membership or a bank account perk.
- Membership route (advanced): pass schemes charge an annual fee of roughly GBP 70 to GBP 470 and, on the cheaper tiers, GBP 24 or so per visit per person. The card totals the fee plus per-visit charges for your party and says whether it beats paying per visit; below several trips a year, one-off pre-books usually win.
- Packaged account route (advanced): lounge access hides in premium bank accounts and some travel insurance add-ons costing GBP 10 to GBP 30 a month. Twelve months of fees is compared with your annual lounge spend, before counting the account's other perks.
