e.g. 7 days in 1 month, adult ~GBP 340
booked-ahead intercity legs: 30-70
Advanced options
The pass's real product isn't cheapness: it's FLEXIBILITY (hop on most trains without booking, change plans daily): point-to-point tickets booked weeks ahead often beat the pass on pure price for a fixed itinerary, then ambush you at walk-up prices the moment plans change. Youth (under 28) and senior passes knock ~25% off: kids under 12 free with an adult pass. The catch: France, Spain, Italy high-speed + all night trains need paid seat reservations (GBP 5-25/leg) ON TOP of the pass: budget them or route around them.
What The Interrail Calculator Works Out
- Per travel day: the pass price divided by its travel days. A seven-days-in-a-month adult pass at about GBP 340 prices each travel day just under GBP 50, against booked-ahead intercity legs at GBP 30 to GBP 70 and walk-up fares at multiples of that.
- Verdict: the pass against the same number of point-to-point legs, with the break-even average fare underneath. A fixed itinerary booked weeks ahead often beats the pass on price; the pass sells the freedom to change plans daily.
- The reservation catch: French, Spanish and Italian high-speed trains and nearly all night trains need paid seat reservations of GBP 5 to GBP 25 a leg on top of the pass. Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux and most regional trains need none.
- Legs per travel day (advanced): a travel day covers unlimited trains, so the morning hop plus the evening push counts as two legs against one day of pass. Real trips often average 1.5 legs a day, which shifts the sums hard toward the pass.
- Reservation fees (advanced): the number of reserved legs times the fee, for everyone travelling, since children pay reservation fees even when their pass is free. Routing through the no-reservation countries keeps this at zero.
- Traveller type (advanced): the youth pass for under-28s is roughly 25% cheaper and the senior pass for over-60s about 10% cheaper than the adult price you enter. The famous version is the youth pass bought the day before a 28th birthday.
- Pass holders and children (advanced): up to two children under 12 travel free with each adult pass, which the package-holiday comparison rarely mentions. Enter the child point-to-point fare so the alternative is priced fairly.
- Pass route and point-to-point route, all-in (advanced): both options for the whole group including reservations and children, with the group verdict showing the difference.
- Cost of changing plans without a pass (advanced): each advance ticket you abandon is replaced by a walk-up fare assumed at 2.5x the price. Enter the legs you might change to put a pound figure on the flexibility the pass includes for nothing.
