Advanced options
Check the bill first: if a service charge is already included, an extra tip is optional. Use the advanced options to enter it so you do not tip twice.
What The Tip Calculator Works Out
- Tip: the bill multiplied by your chosen percentage. UK table-service convention is 10% to 12.5%; 15% is generous, and 20% is a US habit rather than a UK one.
- Total to pay: the bill plus the tip. If each share is rounded up, the rounding is added here too so the total matches what actually goes on the table.
- Each person pays: the total divided equally by the number of people. Equal splits are the norm in the UK for groups of up to about six; bigger groups often itemise.
- Service charge already on the bill (advanced): many UK restaurants add a discretionary 10% to 15% (12.5% is the most common). The calculator strips it back out to find the underlying food bill, so you can see what you have already paid in gratuity. It is always optional and can be removed on request.
- Tip calculated on (advanced): whether your extra tip is a percentage of the food bill or of the bill including the service charge. Tipping on the food bill avoids paying a tip on a tip.
- Custom percentage and extra amount (advanced): override the dropdown with any percentage, or add a fixed sum on top (for example GBP 5 for a waiter who went out of their way).
- Round each share up to (advanced): rounds every person's share up to the nearest 50p, GBP 1 or GBP 5 so nobody is hunting for change. The extra created by rounding is shown separately.
- Total gratuity rate (advanced): service charge plus tip plus rounding, as a percentage of the food bill. If this is already 12.5% or more before you add anything, you have tipped at the UK norm. Since the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, every penny of tips and service charges must be passed to staff.
