Working figures: lift pass ~GBP 48/day, ski + boot hire ~GBP 22/day, group lessons ~GBP 45/day (mornings), mountain lunch + drinks ~GBP 35/day, transfers + ski carriage ~GBP 90/trip, and winter sports insurance ~GBP 25. The package price is famously half the story: the mountain collects the rest daily. Eastern European and smaller French resorts run 30-40% below the famous names for identical snow.
What The Ski Holiday Cost Calculator Works Out
- The extras: everything the package leaves out, itemised: lift pass, ski and boot hire, group lessons, mountain lunches and drinks, transfers with ski carriage, and winter sports insurance. Working rates are GBP 48, GBP 22, GBP 45 and GBP 35 a day plus GBP 115 of fixed trip costs, so a six-day beginner week adds about GBP 1,000 to the package.
- True total per person: the flights-and-accommodation price plus the extras, with a per-ski-day figure underneath. A beginner week typically lands at GBP 1,600 to GBP 2,000 a head, which per day is roughly what other holidays cost per week.
- Extras level: beginners pay for hire and lessons, intermediates for hire only, and kit owners for neither. Lessons are the first line to disappear and hire the second, usually after four to six trips.
- Cut it down: the soft targets in the stack. Smaller French, Italian, Andorran and Bulgarian resorts price passes 30-40% below the famous names, January and late March beat half-term by hundreds of pounds, and supermarket picnics halve the food line.
- Daily rates (advanced): edit the lift pass, hire, lesson and food rates for your actual resort. Mega-resort linked areas run GBP 55 or more a day for the pass; a pre-booked online pass and valley-town hire shop undercut the walk-up and slope-side prices everywhere.
- Transfers, ski carriage and insurance (advanced): the fixed per-trip costs, defaulting to GBP 90 of transfers and carriage plus GBP 25 of winter sports cover. Given what a mountain rescue helicopter costs, the insurance is not optional.
- Apres-ski budget (advanced): a daily drinks-and-evenings allowance that the simple mode leaves at zero because it prices per personality rather than per day. Enter yours and it joins the extras.
- Whole party total (advanced): the per-person total multiplied by the number of people, with the extras share shown separately. A family of four at half-term is where the package-is-half-the-story rule really bites.
- Package share of the real cost (advanced): the flights-and-accommodation price as a percentage of the true total. For a beginner it is usually 40-50%, which is the whole point of the page.
- Own kit pays back after (advanced): the cost of buying skis and boots divided by one trip's hire bill, rounded up to whole trips. Mid-range kit runs GBP 500 to GBP 800 and repays itself in four to six trips; fitted boots first is the settled doctrine, since owned skis mostly improve airline invoices.
