UK networks' EU roaming fees run GBP 2-7/day (a few still include it free: check YOUR plan before paying for anything). Daily fees usually charge only on days you use data: airplane-mode discipline on beach days trims the total. Outside the EU the per-MB rates without a pass are the horror stories: buy the pass or the eSIM BEFORE wheels-up, never after the bill.
What The Roaming Charges Calculator Works Out
- Roaming total: days abroad x your network's daily roaming fee x phones travelling. Most UK networks now charge GBP 2 to GBP 7 a day for EU data that used to be free; two phones on a ten-day trip run GBP 50 to GBP 140 for connectivity the holiday barely notices.
- The eSIM alternative: a 10-20GB travel eSIM at GBP 10 to GBP 15 per phone covers the whole trip, installs in minutes before departure and runs alongside your UK SIM so the number still gets calls and texts. It beats daily fees on anything past four or five days.
- The free alternative: hotel and cafe wi-fi, offline maps downloaded at home and airplane mode in between. The offline-maps download is the one preparation that turns a data plan from necessity into convenience.
- Days you will keep data switched off (advanced): daily fees normally trigger only on days the phone uses data, so beach days in airplane mode are removed from the bill. The total shrinks by exactly the days you skip.
- Phones on plans with free roaming (advanced): a few UK plans still include EU roaming; those phones are taken out of the fee calculation, which is why checking your own plan comes before buying anything.
- eSIM route for this trip (advanced): the eSIM price multiplied by the phones that would otherwise pay fees, regardless of trip length. Regional plans suit multi-stop trips, and hotspotting one eSIM phone covers the family tablets for nothing.
- Cheapest option saves (advanced): the gap between daily roaming fees and the eSIM route, and which one wins. The eSIM breaks even on the day its price divided by the daily fee is reached, typically day five on a GBP 2.50 fee.
- Roaming fees per year (advanced): this trip's fees multiplied by trips a year, for the household weighing a switch to a roaming-inclusive plan.
- Days until the spend cap bites (advanced): UK networks apply a default monthly roaming data spend cap (commonly GBP 45) and let you set your own. The calculator shows on which day of the trip daily fees would hit it, which is the guardrail worth confirming before departure.
- Pay-per-use horror story (advanced): what the same trip would cost at per-megabyte rates with no pass, assuming 500MB a day per phone. Outside the EU this is how four-figure bills happen: buy the pass or the eSIM before wheels-up, never after the bill.
