Annual usually wins from trip 2 or 3: and covers the weekend break you booked on a whim without re-shopping. The lines that matter more than price: medical cover (GBP 2m+ Europe, GBP 5m+ worldwide: a US hospital week is house money), declared pre-existing conditions (undeclared = invalid policy: use specialist insurers if quotes balloon), cancellation cover at your actual holiday value, and the GHIC alongside (free, covers state healthcare in the EU: it's a companion, not a substitute). Buy when you BOOK, not when you fly: cancellation cover starts then.
What The Travel Insurance Calculator Works Out
- Single-trip route: trips a year x the price of one single-trip policy. A typical European week costs GBP 10 to GBP 25 to insure for a healthy adult; premiums climb steeply past 65 and with declared conditions.
- Verdict: the annual multi-trip price against the single-trip total, with the number of trips at which annual breaks even. Annual cover starts around GBP 35 to GBP 60, so the crossover usually lands at two or three trips, and it also covers the weekend booked on a whim.
- What actually matters in the policy: medical cover of GBP 2m plus for Europe and GBP 5m plus worldwide, declared pre-existing conditions (undeclared means invalid), cancellation cover matching the holiday's real value, and per-section excesses. Buy when you book, because cancellation cover starts then.
- Add-ons (advanced): winter sports, cruise, business equipment and gadget cover are priced separately on most policies. Enter the add-on cost per single-trip policy and the add-on cost on the annual policy so both routes are compared all-in.
- Annual policy cost per trip (advanced): the all-in annual price divided by trips, set against one single-trip policy. This is the per-holiday price you are really paying for the convenience of year-round cover.
- Packaged bank account (advanced): accounts costing GBP 10 to GBP 20 a month often include family annual travel cover, which makes double-buying common. The card compares twelve months of fees with the cheaper standalone route; check the included policy's age limits and condition rules.
- Longest trip vs the policy limit (advanced): annual policies cap each trip, typically at 31 days (some offer 45 or 60). A gap year or long-stay trip beyond the cap needs an extension or a backpacker policy, which this card flags.
- Multi-year difference (advanced): the yearly saving of the winning route multiplied by the years you choose, for the household whose travel pattern is settled.
- GHIC: the free Global Health Insurance Card covers state healthcare in the EU but not repatriation, private clinics or anything outside Europe, so it is a companion to insurance rather than a substitute.
