Midsole foam dies before the upper looks tired: the tells are flattened cushioning (press a thumbnail in: dead foam doesn't bounce back), new aches in knees and shins, and visibly compressed wear patterns. Rotating two pairs lets foam decompress between runs and tracks mileage naturally. Log shoe mileage in your running app: memory always undercounts.
What The Running Shoe Mileage Calculator Works Out
- Replace every: the shoe's lifespan in miles divided by your weekly mileage gives weeks per pair, converted to months. Midsole foam loses its rebound somewhere in the 300 to 550 mile band, so a 20-mile week retires a standard trainer roughly every five months.
- Pairs per year: your annual mileage (weekly x 52) divided by the lifespan. At 20 miles a week that is about 2.3 pairs of 450-mile trainers.
- Yearly shoe budget: pairs per year multiplied by the shoe price, with the cost per mile shown underneath. GBP 110 trainers lasting 450 miles cost about 24p a mile, the running economy's core consumable priced honestly.
- Distances in kilometres (advanced): enter weekly distance and run length in km if that is how your watch reports; the dropdown lifespans are converted to km (450 miles is about 724 km) so the maths stays consistent.
- Custom lifespan (advanced): override the dropdown with the figure your own shoes manage. Carbon-plated race shoes often die at 250 to 300 miles; some stout daily trainers reach 600 or more.
- Pairs in rotation (advanced): alternating two or three pairs lets compressed foam recover between runs and staggers replacements. Each pair lasts proportionally longer in calendar time, though you still buy the same number of pairs a year.
- Typical discount (advanced): last season's colourway is the sport's most reliable discount, with the identical shoe often 30% to 40% cheaper once the palette rotates. The discounted budget card shows what disciplined outlet buying saves.
- Race-day shoe (advanced): adds a second, faster shoe used only for races and key sessions, costed on a 300-mile life. GBP 200 plated shoes doing 150 miles a year add roughly GBP 100 to the annual spend.
- Total spend and cost per run (advanced): everyday pairs plus race shoes, after any discount, as a yearly and monthly figure, then divided by your runs per year. Against physio bills and lost training blocks, on-schedule replacement is the cheapest sports medicine available.
