Advanced options
NHS intervals: men can donate every 12 weeks, women every 16 (iron recovery differs). Each donation takes ~470ml and under an hour door to door. Eligibility basics: 17+, generally 50kg+, health questionnaire on the day: check the NHS Give Blood site for the current rules and book. O-negative and B-negative donors: they REALLY want to hear from you.
What The Blood Donation Calculator Works Out
- Donations per year: 52 weeks divided by the NHS minimum interval, rounded down. Men can give whole blood every 12 weeks (4 a year) and women every 16 weeks (3 a year) because iron stores recover on different clocks.
- Over your timeframe: donations per year multiplied by the years ahead, with the volume underneath at 470ml a donation. A decade's steady male donor gives 40 donations and nearly 19 litres.
- Lives helped: each whole-blood donation is separated into red cells, plasma and platelets that can help up to three patients, so the total is multiplied by three.
- Donation type (advanced): platelet donors can give roughly every 4 weeks and plasma donors every 2 weeks by apheresis, which multiplies the yearly count for those with the veins and schedule for longer sessions.
- Custom interval (advanced): enter your own gap in weeks if you donate less often than the minimum, for example every 20 weeks, or if the service asks you to wait longer after a low iron reading.
- Donations already made (advanced): added to the future total to give a lifetime figure and to work out your next milestone. NHS Give Blood sends awards at 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 250, 500 donations and beyond.
- Appointments missed per year (advanced): colds, travel deferrals and new tattoos all push appointments back. Knocking one or two off each year gives a more realistic total than the theoretical maximum.
- Time given (advanced): hours per visit multiplied by donations. The needle-in time is 8 to 10 minutes; the hour is the questionnaire, iron check, rest and tea and biscuits, plus your travel.
- Volume per donation (advanced): whole blood is a standard 470ml; plasma donations are typically 600ml to 700ml, so adjust it to match the donation type. Eligibility basics still apply: 17 or over, generally 50kg or more, and a health questionnaire on the day, so check the current rules before booking.
