park courts 0-14: indoor centres 18-30
community clubs 150-350: with coaching/social
Advanced options
Tennis has quietly become one of Britain's cheapest sports to try: thousands of refurbished park courts run free or a few pounds via booking apps, a playable racket is GBP 25-40, and balls last weeks: the GBP 500-a-year image is the club-and-coaching version, not the entry price. The club earns its fee on the things pay-and-play can't sell: guaranteed courts in peak evenings, organised social play (the hardest part of adult tennis is finding OPPONENTS), leagues, floodlights, and winter indoor access. Join for the fixture list, not the court.
What The Tennis Court Calculator Works Out
- Pay-and-play per year: court rate x hours per month x 12. Refurbished park courts run free to GBP 14 an hour through booking apps, so the six-hours-a-month player spends GBP 0-360 a year on courts; the GBP 500-plus folk figure is the club-and-coaching version.
- vs club membership: compares the court bill with a community club fee (GBP 150-350) and shows the hours per month at which the club becomes cheaper. The club's real product is opponents, leagues, peak-evening courts and floodlights, which pay-and-play cannot book.
- The kit + coaching layer: a GBP 25-40 racket (restring at GBP 20 rather than upgrade), GBP 5 of balls a month, court shoes once hooked, and group adult coaching at GBP 8-12 an hour over one-to-one at GBP 30-45 until there are rallies to fix.
- Court fee split (advanced): singles players usually halve the booking with their opponent; select it and every court cost becomes your half.
- Winter months indoors (advanced): months played at an indoor centre at GBP 18-30 an hour instead of the park rate, the hybrid most year-round players land on.
- Kit and coaching (advanced): a yearly kit budget and coaching sessions per month at a price per session, added equally to both routes so the comparison stays fair.
- Joining fee and court levy (advanced): many clubs charge a one-off joining fee and some add a court or floodlight levy per hour; both go into the club route's first-year figure.
- Pay-and-play all-in and club route (advanced): the full first-year cost of each route including kit and coaching, and the difference between them.
- Per hour on court (advanced): the all-in pay-and-play cost divided by hours actually played, the figure to compare with padel or five-a-side.
- Break-even hours (advanced): the monthly hours at which the club's fixed fees are covered by the court costs you avoid, using your blended indoor/outdoor rate and any levies.
