Setup: hive + frames (GBP 250+), suit, smoker and tools (GBP 150), and the bees themselves: a nucleus colony runs GBP 150-250. Yearly: varroa treatments, winter feed, replacement frames and foundation. Yields swing wildly with weather and forage: 10-15kg is a realistic average, a great year doubles it, a bad one is zero (and you feed them instead). Join a local association FIRST: taster days, mentors, and often loaner equipment.
What The Beekeeping Cost Calculator Works Out
- Honey harvest: kilos per hive converted to 340g jars (15kg is 44 jars) and valued at GBP 7 a jar, the typical farm-gate and back-door price. A realistic English average is 10kg to 15kg a hive; a fine forage summer doubles it and a wet June yields nothing plus a feed bill.
- Hive pays for itself in: setup cost divided by the yearly net (honey value minus running costs). GBP 600 of kit against about GBP 190 net a year is roughly three seasons.
- Before you buy bees: the association route. Local beekeeping associations run winter theory courses and summer apiary sessions, lend equipment, sell nucleus colonies from known-gentle stock and supply the mentor whose glance diagnoses in seconds what the book describes in chapters.
- Jar size and selling price (advanced): change the 340g jar (227g and 454g are the other common sizes) and your price. Small-producer labelling rules let you sell at the gate, at markets and to local shops.
- Share of the crop you sell (advanced): most hobby keepers eat and give away a good part of the harvest. The jars-kept card values what stays in the household at your own price.
- Number of hives and cost of each additional hive (advanced): the suit, smoker and tools are bought once, so a second hive costs only the box, frames and bees (GBP 300 to GBP 400). Two hives beat one for comparison and for rescuing a struggling colony with the other's brood and stores.
- Other income per hive (advanced): beeswax for candles and polish, selling nucleus colonies from splits (GBP 150 to GBP 250 each) and occasional pollination fees from allotments or orchards.
- Annual income and position after five seasons (advanced): the whole apiary's income minus running costs, and the cumulative position after five average years, shown season by season in the table. Weather makes the real line lumpy: the bees' ledger is weather derivatives with wings.
- Your honey per kilo (advanced): your jar price scaled to a kilo, against supermarket blended honey at GBP 6 to GBP 9 and single-origin British honey at GBP 15 to GBP 25. Unblended, unheated honey from a postcode's own flowers is the one product the supermarket cannot sell you.
