Works for anything with a gate price: National Trust, English Heritage, zoos, theme parks, cinemas, soft play. The honest input is the visit count: use LAST year's actual visits, not this year's intentions (gym-membership maths claims another victim otherwise). Watch for the pass changing behaviour though: a paid-for pass genuinely does get families out more: "it's free now" is a powerful Sunday argument.
What The Annual Pass Calculator Works Out
- Paying per visit costs: single entry x the visits you will honestly make. The treacherous input is the visit forecast: buyers systematically price their intentions rather than their history.
- Verdict: the pass wins if the gate total beats its price, and the card shows the saving or the extra either way. A GBP 120 pass against GBP 25 gates with six visits saves GBP 30.
- Break-even: the pass price divided by the entry price, rounded up: the visit at which membership starts paying. Everything past it rides free.
- People covered by the pass (advanced): family and joint memberships cover two adults and children for one price while the gate charges per head, which multiplies the per-visit saving. Enter the per-person entry price and how many the pass covers.
- Parking saved per visit (advanced): National Trust and many coastal and country-park car parks are free to members, often GBP 4 to GBP 8 a visit, the quiet clincher for walkers who never go inside.
- Cafe and shop spend and member discount (advanced): the 10% to 20% members' discount only counts on what you would have spent anyway. The perks card adds parking and discounts to the pass's side of the ledger.
- Cost per visit with the pass (advanced): the pass price spread over your visits, against the gate price. The lower this gets, the more the "it's free now" argument wins wet Sundays.
- Months you would actually use it (advanced): a seasonal attraction, or a pass bought for one golden summer that bills through two indifferent winters. The visits-a-month card shows the rate needed in the months you will really go.
- On last year's evidence (advanced): enter the visits you actually made last year and the calculator tells you whether the pass would have paid. Buy on evidence or a genuinely planned programme (the season of toddler soft play, the summer of castles), decline on intentions alone, and diary the direct-debit renewal.
