intercity coach booked ahead: 8-30
Advanced options
The coach's discount is really a wage: divide the saving by the extra hours and you're being paid an hourly rate to sit longer: take the job when the rate beats what the time is worth to you, decline when it doesn't. The train's gap shrinks with a railcard (1/3 off for most adults for GBP 30/yr), split ticketing, and advance singles: run those BEFORE deciding: a GBP 55 walk-up is often a GBP 32 advance. Coach wins hardest on the routes where rail means changes: direct coach beats two-change train for many city pairs on stress alone.
What The Coach vs Train Calculator Works Out
- Saving + hourly rate: the train fare minus the coach fare, divided by the extra hours the coach takes. A GBP 37 saving over three extra hours is an hourly wage of about GBP 12 for sitting longer, which is the honest way to frame the choice.
- The decision rule: take the coach when its hourly rate beats what those specific hours are worth to you, and the train when it does not. The dozing student's hours price differently from the billing consultant's.
- Closing the gap: run the railcard, advance singles, split tickets and off-peak timing before deciding. The honest train fare is often 40% below the first quote, at which point many coach wages fall under any threshold.
- Your time is worth (advanced): the hourly threshold the decision rule uses, defaulting to GBP 12. Enter your own figure, for example your net hourly pay, and the verdict uses it instead.
- Railcard (advanced): applies a third off the train fare for GBP 30 a year, which most adults can get through one card or another. The train fare after the railcard card shows the repriced fare and the whole comparison updates.
- Travellers and trips per year (advanced): scale the saving to a group and a year. Groups of three or four should also check GroupSave rail tickets and the cost of driving, which often beat both.
- Getting to the coach station (advanced): the bus or tube to Victoria or the out-of-town coach stop. Coach stations are usually central but not always as central as the railway station, so add the cost to the coach side.
- Extra hours aboard per year (advanced): the total extra seat time for everyone across the year's trips, with the effective hourly wage the coach pays for it.
- Versus the minimum wage (advanced): the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over from April 2026, as a benchmark for whether the coach is paying you a legal hourly rate to sit longer.
