What The Induction Hob Cost Calculator Works Out
- Per day: the hob's average power in kW x minutes a day, divided by 60 for kilowatt-hours and multiplied by the electricity unit rate, which defaults to the current Ofgem price cap rate (26.32p per kWh from October 2026). A half-hour daily habit at 1.8kW uses 0.9 kWh, about 24p.
- Per month: the daily cost x 30. Roughly GBP 7 a month on induction for the half-hour habit, pocket change beside the oven and shower.
- Same cooking on gas: induction couples about 85% of its draw into the pan against the 40% a flame lands, so gas needs more than twice the kilowatt-hours for the same dinner, but at the price cap gas rate of about 8p per kWh it usually still edges the running-cost column at around GBP 4.50 a month.
- Induction and gas efficiency (advanced): edit the share of energy reaching the pan. Induction tests at 80% to 90%, gas hobs at 35% to 45% depending on pan size and flame setting.
- Gas unit rate and standing charge (advanced): your gas price per kWh and the daily standing charge, both defaulting to the current Ofgem cap. The standing charge is paid whether you cook or not, which is why it decides more hob debates than the hob does.
- Induction per year (advanced): the daily cost x 365 with the kilowatt-hours used.
- Ceramic electric hob per year (advanced): the same heat into the pan from a radiant ceramic or solid-plate hob at about 70% efficiency, the fair comparison for anyone replacing an old electric hob rather than gas.
- Gas hob plus its standing charge (advanced): the annual gas burned plus a full year of the gas standing charge, which is the true cost of keeping gas for a hob alone.
- Going all-electric saves (advanced): if the hob is the last gas appliance, dropping the gas supply saves the standing charge minus the extra electricity cost, and the card divides the hob's purchase and fitting cost by that saving for a payback in years. Pans must be ferromagnetic (the fridge-magnet test), the circuit may need upgrading, and boost modes briefly draw 3kW-plus.
