What The Bread Maker Cost Calculator Works Out
- Cost per home loaf: about 65p of ingredients (500g of strong flour dominating, plus yeast, salt, a little fat and sugar) and the machine's modest 0.4 kWh cycle at the current Ofgem price cap unit rate, around 75p all in.
- Saving per year: the shop loaf price minus the home cost, multiplied by loaves a week and 52. Against GBP 1.40-plus bakery-style bread that is 60-odd pence a loaf, about GBP 100 a year at three loaves a week.
- Machine pays for itself in: the machine price divided by the yearly saving, in months. Three loaves a week repay a GBP 90 machine inside a year; against the 75p value sliced loaf it may never pay back on price alone.
- Ingredients per loaf (advanced): adjust for bulk flour sacks and supermarket yeast tubs (which push the cost towards 50p) or for seeded, wholemeal and enriched loaves that cost more.
- Electricity per cycle and unit rate (advanced): most machines use 0.3 to 0.5 kWh for a standard three-hour programme, and the unit rate defaults to the current Ofgem price cap; rapid bakes use a little less, long wholemeal programmes a little more.
- Machine life (advanced): spreads the purchase price over every loaf baked in that time, so the true-cost card shows the real per-loaf figure including depreciation. Eight to ten years is typical for a well-used machine.
- Vs the value sliced loaf (advanced): the honest comparison against the cheapest bread on the shelf, machine depreciation included. Industrial economics usually win on price; the warm loaf at 7am is the unpriced line item.
- Stale bread thrown away (advanced): the share of shop loaves binned half-eaten, which raises the effective price of each loaf actually eaten. Baking and slice-and-freeze habits match baking to consumption and end the half-stale-loaf tax that flatters shop bread's apparent price.
- Net saving over the machine's life (advanced): the yearly saving multiplied by the machine's life minus its price. Strong bread flour is non-negotiable, and the dough cycle's second career kneading pizza bases and rolls often outvalues the standard loaf.
