The industry is unregulated and the search results for "emergency locksmith" are its worst neighbourhood: national call-centres resell your job to whoever's nearby at 2-3x the price, and the drill-first cowboy destroys a lock a pro would pick in minutes (then sells you the replacement). A trained locksmith opens most domestic lockouts NON-DESTRUCTIVELY: if drilling is the opening move on a standard lock, stop the job. Save a vetted local (MLA-approved) number in your phone NOW, while you're not standing in the rain.
What The Locksmith Calculator Works Out
- Expected cost: the honest-band price for the job multiplied by the number of locks or doors, with 15% off if you can book ahead rather than call in an emergency. Daytime non-destructive lockouts run GBP 70-110, evening and weekend GBP 120-180, euro-cylinder changes about GBP 75 including the part, BS3621 mortice work GBP 110-150 and uPVC multipoint repairs GBP 150-220.
- The call-centre trap: national call-centres resell your job to whoever is nearby at two to three times the phone quote; the from-GBP 59 becomes GBP 300 on the doorstep. Ask for the total including callout, labour, parts and VAT, and confirm non-destructive entry first. You owe nothing for a quote and may refuse the job.
- Prevention pricing: a spare key with a neighbour costs nothing, a police-preferred key safe GBP 25-60, and an anti-snap TS007 three-star euro cylinder GBP 25-40 as a part. Cylinder snapping is the volume burglary method on uPVC doors and the swap is a 20-minute DIY job.
- VAT (advanced): a VAT-registered firm adds 20% unless the quote says inclusive; many sole-trader locksmiths are below the threshold and charge none. The VAT card shows the amount so you can compare an inclusive quote with an exclusive one.
- Extra parts and callout fee (advanced): an upgraded lock, new keys cut, a replacement handle or a separate travel charge. The rule is one total figure before anyone sets off.
- Anti-snap cylinders fitted on the same visit (advanced): having the locksmith upgrade your other doors while on site avoids a second callout. Fitted prices run GBP 50-80 per cylinder; the default is GBP 60 and is editable.
- Key safe supplied and fitted (advanced): a police-approved key safe fitted to brick costs GBP 40-90 supplied and fitted, and dissolves the lockout category for key workers, dog walkers and the forgetful alike.
- Call-centre doorstep estimate (advanced): your all-in cost multiplied by 2.5, the midpoint of the 2-3x premium a call-centre job attracts once the van arrives. It is the saving from storing a vetted MLA-approved local number today.
- Prevention pays back after (advanced): the prevention spend divided by the cost of one callout, so you can see how many lockouts a key safe and anti-snap cylinders need to avoid before they have paid for themselves, usually fewer than one.
