Party portions assume the caterer's grid cut (strips, then fingers): wedge-cutting the same cake yields half as many, which is how weddings run out. Squares out-serve rounds at the same size (corners are free cake). Tall cakes (3+ layers) serve the party numbers even in slim slices: sponge maths favours height.
What The Cake Servings Calculator Works Out
- Servings: the catering trade's portion chart for your size and shape. A 20cm round gives 24 party fingers or 12 dessert wedges, a 25cm round 38 or 19, and squares out-serve rounds at every size because the corners are free cake the circle surrendered.
- Cutting it right: the grid cut that the chart assumes: a 5cm strip across the cake, laid flat and sliced into 2.5cm fingers. Wedge-cutting the same cake yields half as many, which is exactly how weddings run out in front of the photographer.
- Sizing up or down: each 5cm of diameter adds roughly 50% more cake, so two smaller cakes beat one giant for mixed events and one can be the kitchen spare.
- Guests and portions per guest (advanced): birthday parties consume a finger each plus seconds for a reliable quarter; an evening wedding crowd after a hog roast runs nearer half a portion each; children's parties want seconds all round. The calculator turns that into cakes needed.
- Cake height (advanced): a tall three-or-four-layer cake serves about 30% more in slimmer slices, a single shallow layer about 30% fewer. Sponge maths favours height.
- Custom round diameter (advanced): for a tin size not in the list, servings are worked out from the top surface at 12.5 sq cm per party finger with a 5% allowance for trimming, which reproduces the chart for the standard sizes.
- Keep a tier or spare back (advanced): adds one extra cake to buy, for the traditional top tier kept for the anniversary freezer or the spare held in the kitchen.
- Spare slices and cost per serving (advanced): the slices left after every guest has had their share, and the cake's price divided by its servings. A GBP 12 supermarket celebration cake works out at about 50p a party finger; a GBP 45 bakery cake nearer GBP 2.
- Cupcake equivalent (advanced): one cupcake per party finger, the standard conversion for venues where forks and plates are a problem.
