Assumes gas at ~0.17kg per session (GBP 0.55 across 4 pizzas) and GBP 2 of dough + toppings per pizza vs GBP 10 average takeaway pizza. The 60-second cook is real once the stone hits 400C+ (allow 20-25 min heat-up): the first three pizzas of your career will be charcoal crescents: this is tradition and everyone's were. Wood-fired versions swap gas cost for logs and add 30 minutes of ceremony.
What The Pizza Oven Cost Calculator Works Out
- Cost per home pizza: GBP 2 of dough and toppings plus the session's gas (about 0.17kg, roughly 55p) shared across the pizzas you cook. A home pizza lands nearer GBP 2 than GBP 3 against the GBP 10 takeaway average.
- Oven pays for itself in: the oven price divided by the monthly saving (saving per pizza x pizzas per month), in months of the season. A family running three four-pizza nights a month repays a GBP 300 oven inside a season.
- The honest caveats: payback assumes those nights genuinely replace takeaways rather than add to them, and that the oven comes back out of the garage in April, the category's real depreciation event.
- Dough and toppings per pizza (advanced): override the GBP 2 ingredient estimate: a basic margherita from flour, yeast, tinned tomatoes and mozzarella is nearer GBP 1.50, a loaded one with cured meats GBP 3 plus.
- Fuel and fuel cost per session (advanced): gas at about 55p a session, kiln-dried logs at GBP 3 to GBP 5 a session for the wood-fired tier, or electricity for an indoor oven (about 2kWh, 50p to 60p).
- Takeaway price and season length (advanced): change the GBP 10 benchmark to your local takeaway and set how many months a year you actually cook outside. The British outdoor oven works April to October in practice, about seven months.
- Accessories (advanced): peel, cover, infrared thermometer and a gas regulator add GBP 50 to GBP 150 to the real outlay and are included in the payback.
- Share of nights that replace a takeaway (advanced): the number doing the heavy lifting. Pizza nights that replace takeaways bank the margin; nights that join them add a delightful cost line. The real saving per year and the calendar payback use this share.
- Net position over the years (advanced): years of real saving minus the up-front outlay, so you can see whether the oven is a money decision or, like the bread maker, a warm ritual with a margin attached only as long as it keeps getting used.
