Allow ~350g raw meat on the bone per person (250g boneless), plus GBP 1 of veg and potatoes and ~GBP 1.50 of trimmings (Yorkshires, stuffing, gravy) each. The leftovers are the roast's secret margin: Monday's sandwiches, the stock from the bones, bubble and squeak: a chicken realistically feeds six meals, not one.
What The Sunday Roast Cost Calculator Works Out
- Total cost: meat plus GBP 1 of vegetables and potatoes plus GBP 1.50 of trimmings (Yorkshires, stuffing, gravy) per head. A family-of-four chicken dinner comes to well under GBP 20 fully trimmed, around GBP 4 to GBP 5 a head.
- The breakdown: meat is 350g of raw bone-in joint per person at the typical per-kilo price: chicken about GBP 5, pork shoulder GBP 9, beef topside GBP 12, leg of lamb GBP 14, or a nut roast at about GBP 2 a portion.
- vs the pub carvery: what the same number of people would pay at about GBP 14 a head, minus your cost. A gastropub roast at GBP 20 plus widens the gap further.
- Your meat price per kg (advanced): type in the price on the label to override the typical figure, for a butcher's joint, an organic bird or a yellow-sticker bargain. Ignored for the nut roast.
- Raw meat per person (advanced): 350g covers bone-in joints with leftovers; 250g suits boneless cuts or smaller appetites, 450g to 500g a bone-heavy rib or a hungry table.
- Veg, trimmings, pudding and drinks per head (advanced): edit the fixed per-head allowances or add the dessert and a bottle of wine that the pub price quietly excludes, so the comparison is like for like.
- Pub roast price per head (advanced): change the GBP 14 carvery benchmark to the price at your local.
- Cost per plate including leftovers (advanced): spreads the total across the Sunday plates plus the extra meals the joint makes afterwards: Monday's sandwiches, Tuesday's curry, stock from the bones, bubble and squeak. A single chicken honestly amortises across five or six eatings.
- The habit per year and saving vs the pub (advanced): multiplies the roast cost and the pub saving by how many roasts you cook a year, so a weekly roast shows its annual bill and what the pub version would have cost.
