40-60 an hour: 3-4 fix the gun mount
No licence needed to TRY it: grounds supervise beginners under their own arrangements with everything provided: the certificate question only arrives if you want your own gun. Per-clay is the real currency once past the experience-day stage: clays ~40-60p each + cartridges ~35-40p a shot means a 50-clay round is GBP 20-25 in consumables at club rates: the experience-day premium buys the instructor, the gun and the faff-free afternoon: fair once, poor value monthly.
What The Clay Pigeon Shooting Calculator Works Out
- Cost: the per-shooter price for the format multiplied by the number of shooters, then by visits per year. A supervised 25-clay beginner session runs about GBP 45, a half-day with 50 to 75 clays GBP 75, and a self-funded 50-clay club visit about GBP 35.
- How it works legally: no certificate is needed to try it because registered grounds supervise novices with their own guns. Owning a shotgun means a police-issued certificate (around GBP 80, a referee, a cabinet inspection and five-yearly renewal). Ear and eye protection is provided everywhere.
- If you get into it: club membership at GBP 50 to GBP 150 a year unlocks per-clay pricing, three or four coached hours at GBP 40 to GBP 60 fix the gun-mount faults that a thousand unsupervised clays bake in, and a sound secondhand over-under starts at GBP 400 to GBP 700 plus a GBP 150 cabinet.
- Clays per shooter (advanced): how many targets each person shoots per visit. It drives the cost-per-clay card, which is the fairest way to compare an experience day with club shooting.
- Club clay and cartridge prices (advanced): the two consumables that make up a club round, typically 40p to 60p a clay and 35p to 40p a cartridge. Together a 50-clay round is GBP 20 to GBP 25.
- Club membership (advanced): the annual fee per shooter that buys access to per-clay rates. It is the fixed cost in the club-route total.
- Travel, food and gun hire (advanced): grounds are rural, so fuel and lunch add up, and clubs charge GBP 10 to GBP 20 to hire a gun until you own one. Added per visit to both routes.
- Coaching hours (advanced): coached hours per shooter over the year at an assumed GBP 50 an hour, added to both routes since lessons are worth buying whichever way you shoot.
- Experience-day route versus club route (advanced): both routes totalled over a year for the whole group, with the saving shown. Experience days are fair value once or twice a year and poor value monthly.
- Club membership break-even (advanced): the membership fee divided by the per-visit saving (experience price less club consumables) gives the number of visits a year at which joining pays for itself, usually two to four.
