Advanced options
The rod licence (Environment Agency, England and Wales) covers coarse fishing and non-migratory trout: juniors under 13 fish free, 13-16s need a free licence. Day tickets run GBP 6-12 at club and commercial waters: club season books (GBP 30-80/yr) undercut day tickets fast. Sea fishing from shore needs NO licence at all: the genuinely free version. Starter coarse kit: GBP 60-120 does it honestly: the tackle industry will happily sell you GBP 2,000 of marginal gains thereafter.
What The Fishing Cost Calculator Works Out
- Per year: the rod licence plus trips x the per-trip ticket-and-bait figure. The Environment Agency coarse and trout licence is about GBP 35 a year (juniors under 13 free, 13-16s a free licence), day tickets GBP 6-12, so a 20-trip season usually lands around GBP 300.
- Per trip all-in: the yearly figure divided by trips, so the licence is spread across every visit rather than felt once in April.
- Per hour on the bank: the per-trip cost divided by the hours fished, 5 by default. At around GBP 3 an hour it undercuts every gym, course or membership on this site; sea fishing from the shore needs no licence at all.
- The kit question: a starter outfit (rod, reel, net, box of terminal tackle, GBP 60-120) spread over the trips in a season adds only a few pounds a trip; the tackle industry's upper catalogue sells marginal gains after that.
- Hours per trip (advanced): overrides the 5-hour assumption. Dawn-to-dusk summer sessions of 10-12 hours halve the hourly cost; a quick evening session doubles it.
- Travel and parking (advanced): fuel and car park charges per trip, often the biggest hidden line for anglers driving to commercial fisheries or the coast.
- Starter kit and seasons (advanced): change the kit price and how many seasons it is spread over. A GBP 100 outfit over five seasons is GBP 20 a year; the all-in cards use this amortised figure.
- Club season book (advanced): enter a club book price (typically GBP 30-80 a year) and the calculator replaces day tickets with it while keeping bait, travel and the licence, then shows the saving and the number of trips at which the book breaks even against day tickets.
- All-in per year and per hour (advanced): licence, tickets, bait, travel and amortised kit together, and that total divided by the hours actually fished.
- Five-season total (advanced): five years of licence, tickets and travel with the kit bought once, the honest figure for anyone deciding whether to take the hobby up.
