Counts assume standard 50g balls (~110m in DK) at average adult sizing: your PATTERN's quantities always win where you have one, and larger sizes add 1-2 balls. Buy it ALL at once from one dye lot: a mid-jumper ball from a different lot shows as a stripe you'll see forever. Overbuy by one: shops take returns, half-finished jumpers don't.
What The Knitting Wool Calculator Works Out
- Wool needed: a folk-standard ball count for the garment (hat 2, scarf 4, baby cardigan 3, adult jumper 10-14, blanket 20-plus) multiplied by the yarn-weight factor and rounded up to whole balls. Counts assume standard 50g balls of double knitting, about 110m each.
- Yarn weight: 4-ply's finer gauge needs about 30% more balls for the same garment; chunky needs about 30% fewer. DK is the British default.
- Budget: the ball count at GBP 3 to GBP 6 a ball, the span from supermarket acrylic to a wool-mix. An average jumper is 600g and 1,300m of yarn costing GBP 35-75.
- The dye lot rule: buy every ball together from one dye lot, because mill batches vary enough that a mid-garment substitution reads as a stripe forever. The lot number on the ball band outranks the brand.
- Size adjustment (advanced): small sizes save a ball; large sizes and added length need one or two more. Pattern quantities override any generic table.
- Spare balls (advanced): the overbuy-by-one doctrine. Shops accept returned intact balls; half-finished jumpers accept nothing.
- Price per ball (advanced): gives an exact budget instead of a range, with and without the spare. Supermarket acrylic is GBP 2-3 a ball, wool-mix GBP 4-6, and indie-dyed skeins are priced like wine.
- Ball weight and metres (advanced): enter the figures from your ball band if it is not a standard 50g/110m DK ball; 100g balls halve the count to buy, and the yarn total adjusts.
- Pattern says (advanced): if you have a pattern, type its ball count and the calculator uses it instead of the estimate, then adds your spares.
- Grams per metre check (advanced): ball weight divided by length, a quick sanity check of the yarn's real weight category: under 0.3 g/m is 4-ply or finer, about 0.45 is DK, 0.6-1.0 is aran, and heavier is chunky.
