Going rates: teens/students GBP 8-10/hr, experienced/qualified sitters GBP 11-15, agency sitters GBP 14-18 + booking fee, London adds a couple of pounds throughout. Convention says: round up to the hour, cash or transfer on the night, taxi money home if it's late, and the good sitter's number is guarded like a state secret. The sitter isn't a luxury line: couples who never get an evening pay differently.
What The Babysitter Cost Calculator Works Out
- Babysitter: hours out multiplied by the hourly rate. Going rates run GBP 8 to GBP 10 an hour for the teenage and student tier, GBP 11 to GBP 15 for experienced and first-aid-qualified sitters and GBP 14 to GBP 18 plus a booking fee through agencies, whose vetting (DBS checks, references, insurance) is what the premium buys. London adds a couple of pounds throughout.
- True cost of the night out: the sitter plus what you spend on the evening, with the sitter's share of the total. A standard five-hour evening carries a GBP 40 to GBP 75 surcharge before the first drink is poured, and the sitter frequently matches or exceeds the restaurant.
- Bring the cost down: the babysitting circle (parents sitting for each other on tokens or points), grandparents, reciprocal sleepovers and the daytime date while school performs the childcare are the folk economy that dodges the surcharge.
- Round up and minimum hours (advanced): convention is to round up to the whole hour, and agency and professional sitters often set a three or four hour minimum, so a short evening costs the same as a longer one.
- Taxi and agency fee (advanced): funding the late taxi home is expected when the sitter is not driving, and agencies add a per-booking fee of around GBP 5 to GBP 20 on top of the hourly rate.
- Late rate (advanced): many sitters charge more after midnight; enter the hours past midnight and the higher rate and the uplift is added. Sitters often also add a pound or two an hour for extra children.
- All-in cost per hour out (advanced): the whole evening divided by the hours, which is the honest hourly price of adult time.
- Per month and per year (advanced): a monthly night out at GBP 120 all-in is a GBP 1,400 a year commitment that sits in family budgets beside swimming lessons and school uniform, rationed by the same logic and defended, by most couples who keep it, with the same reasoning: some standing charges buy the thing the rest of the budget exists for. Babysitting in the child's own home sits outside childcare registration, so the market runs on reputation, and the good sitter's number is the neighbourhood's genuinely scarce resource.
