Advanced options
Covers kit and consumables for year one: pram, sleeping, car seat, clothes, nappies, feeding kit and sundries. Childcare is excluded and dwarfs everything here when it starts. Child Benefit (GBP 27.05/week for a first child) offsets a meaningful slice: claim it even if the high-income charge applies, for the NI credits.
What The Baby Cost Calculator Works Out
- First-year estimate: the kit and consumables shopping list for year one at mid-range prices: travel system about GBP 500, nursery and safe-sleeping kit GBP 400, a properly fitted car seat GBP 150, clothes GBP 300, a year of nappies about GBP 450, feeding equipment GBP 150 and GBP 300 of sundries, roughly GBP 2,250 in all, or GBP 2,850 with formula. The budget style scales the kit lines to 55% and premium to 180%; nappies stay fixed because babies use the same number whatever you spend.
- Breakdown: each line after your buying style is applied. Second-hand covers nearly everything safely with one firm exception: car seats, where an unknown history (a prior crash invisible to inspection) puts used ones from strangers off the table.
- Not included: the costs that dwarf the kit. Formal childcare commonly rivals a mortgage once it begins, though the funded-hours schemes from nine months have reshaped that for working parents; lost earnings through parental leave, housing and car upgrades all outrank any pram decision.
- Line-by-line amounts (advanced): every mid-range figure above becomes editable, so you can price your actual pram or skip a line you have been given. Your buying style still scales them.
- Gifts and hand-me-downs (advanced): the value of kit received free, which is often several hundred pounds given how deep the NCT and marketplace second-hand economy runs in baby goods.
- Child Benefit (advanced): GBP 27.05 a week for a first child in 2026/27, about GBP 1,400 across the year. Claim it in every household, even where the high-income charge (from GBP 60,000) takes the cash back, because the claim earns State Pension National Insurance credits.
- Net cost (advanced): the first-year estimate minus Child Benefit and gifts, with the monthly equivalent, which is the figure to put in the family budget.
- Biggest line and budget route (advanced): which category dominates and what the whole list would cost on the budget setting, so you can see what the premium choices are really buying. Supermarket own-brand nappies and formula meet identical standards to the brands; infant formula composition is regulated and the price difference is marketing.
- Comparison table (advanced): every line at budget, mid-range and premium prices beside your own figures. The single best financial move is boring: start the childcare research and any nursery waiting lists in pregnancy, since the big number arrives on a schedule.
