Gross figures. There is no legal right to premium overtime rates in the UK; your contract sets the rate, but your average pay across all hours worked must not fall below the minimum wage.
What The Overtime Calculator Works Out
- Standard pay: your normal hourly rate multiplied by your contracted hours for the week.
- Overtime pay: hourly rate x overtime premium x extra hours. On GBP 15 an hour, five hours at time and a half (x1.5) adds GBP 112.50. Time and a half is the most common weekday premium where one is offered; time and a quarter and plain time are also widespread.
- Total weekly pay: standard pay plus all overtime, gross. There is no legal right to premium overtime pay in the UK, or to be paid for overtime at all unless your contract says so; only the minimum wage floor across all hours is guaranteed.
- Premium-rate hours (advanced): a second block of hours at a higher multiplier, typically double time for Sundays, nights or bank holidays in retail, logistics, the NHS and manufacturing. Included in the total.
- Overtime take-home (advanced): overtime pay after your marginal income tax and National Insurance rate (28% for basic-rate earners, 42% at higher rate, 47% at additional rate) and any pension percentage taken from it. Overtime is taxed like any other pay, so a heavy month can temporarily push you into a higher band through PAYE, which usually evens out over the year.
- Overtime pay per year (advanced): the week's overtime multiplied by the number of weeks you work the pattern, gross and net. Regular, compulsory or guaranteed overtime should also be reflected in your holiday pay following employment tribunal rulings.
- Average rate across all hours (advanced): total pay divided by total hours, checked against the National Living Wage (GBP 12.71 for 21 and over from April 2026). Your average across all hours actually worked must stay at or above the minimum, including unpaid overtime.
- Total hours this week (advanced): flags weeks over the 48-hour Working Time Regulations limit, which is averaged over 17 weeks and can be opted out of individually in writing.
