What The Poker Outs Calculator Works Out
- Chance of hitting: the exact probability that one of your outs arrives, from the unseen cards: 47 after the flop, 46 after the turn. A nine-out flush draw hits by the river about 35% of the time, and 19.6% with one card to come. Standard counts: gutshot 4, two overcards 6, open-ender 8, flush draw 9, flush draw plus gutshot 12, open-ender plus flush draw 15.
- Odds against: (1 - chance) / chance, the figure to compare with the pot odds. The flush draw is about 1.9 to 1 against by the river and 4.1 to 1 on a single card.
- Rule of 4 and 2: outs x 4 with two cards to come, outs x 2 with one. It stays within a point or two of exact for ordinary draws and only drifts optimistic for monster draws in the mid-teens.
- Pot odds (advanced): the pot you can win divided by the amount you must call. A GBP 100 pot for a GBP 25 call is 4 to 1, and you need at least 20% equity (call / (pot + call)) for the call to break even.
- Implied odds (advanced): the extra money you expect to win from later streets when the draw hits. Deep stacks make gutshots playable; short stacks make them folds. Enter it as the extra amount and it is added to the pot in the EV sum.
- Dirty outs (advanced): outs that also complete an opponent's better hand, such as the flush card that pairs the board against a possible full house. Counting them as half or nothing gives the discounted hit chance; over-counting dirty outs is the classic intermediate leak.
- Expected value of calling (advanced): hit chance x (pot + implied extra) minus miss chance x call. Positive means the call makes money on average.
- Verdict (advanced): call, fold or marginal from the EV. With two cards to come the headline chance assumes you see both for this one price, which is only true if the opponent is all in or will check the turn; otherwise judge each street on the one-card odds.
