Odds computed from the game's combinatorics. Any-prize odds are far friendlier (roughly 1 in 9-13 depending on the game) because they include the smallest tiers. Every line has the same chance every draw: previous results, birthdays and "due" numbers change nothing except how many people you'd share with.
What The Lottery Odds Calculator Works Out
- Jackpot odds per line: pure combinatorics. Six balls from 59 gives 45,057,474 equally likely tickets; EuroMillions' five from 50 plus two Lucky Stars from 12 is just under 140 million; Thunderball about 8 million and Set For Life about 15.3 million, the friendlier games buying shorter odds with smaller, capped prizes.
- Expected wait for the jackpot: the odds divided by the lines you play in a year (lines x draws x 52), with the annual spend alongside. A single weekly Lotto line averages hundreds of thousands of years.
- Perspective: the chance of having won at least once had you played every draw since the pyramids were built, 1 - (1 - 1/odds) to the power of the lines played. The number exists to make the odds felt rather than read.
- Chance in your playing lifetime (advanced): the same compounding over the years you expect to keep playing. Thirty years of two Lotto lines a week is about a 0.007% chance, or 1 in 14,000.
- Total spent (advanced): price x lines x draws x 52 x years. Enter a savings rate to see what the same money would have grown to instead; GBP 4 a week at 4% for 30 years is around GBP 12,000. Enter your own price per line if you play through a syndicate or a subscription.
- Your share of the jackpot (advanced): the jackpot divided by the syndicate members. Syndicates buy proportionally more chances at proportionally shared prizes: they change the variance, not the expected value.
- Odds of winning any prize (advanced): roughly 1 in 9.3 for Lotto, 1 in 13 for EuroMillions and Thunderball and 1 in 12.4 for Set For Life, dominated by the free Lucky Dip and smallest tiers. The gap between "winning something" and "winning" is the industry's load-bearing ambiguity.
- No numbers are ever due: every draw is independent and 1-2-3-4-5-6 is exactly as likely as any other set. The only real optimisation is less popular numbers (avoiding the 1 to 31 birthday range), which improves not the odds of winning but the chance of not sharing.
- Please play for fun, not as a plan; 18+.
