Enter odds as fractions (5/2), decimals (3.5) or evens. Estimates only; bookmaker bonuses, Rule 4 deductions and dead heats can change actual returns.
What The Trixie Calculator Works Out
- Bet structure: a Trixie is 4 separate bets on 3 selections: 3 doubles and 1 treble. The stake is per bet, so a GBP 1 Trixie costs GBP 4 win only or GBP 8 each way.
- Why a Trixie: the smallest full-cover multiple, linking three selections in 4 bets with no singles. Two winners return the two-winner double; three winners land all four bets. It is a cheap way to combine three fancied horses, and the Patent is the same bet with singles added for 7 units.
- Decimal odds: each fractional price is converted to decimal (5/2 becomes 3.5, evens is 2.0) so the combinations can be multiplied together. Enter decimals directly if your bookmaker shows them.
- Total return: every one of the 4 bets is settled separately and the returns are added up. A lost selection makes every bet containing it return nothing, so you need at least 2 winning selections before anything comes back, because there are no singles. A void or non-runner counts as odds of 1.0 (that leg's stake is simply carried through).
- Profit: total return minus total stake. The breakdown table shows how much came from each bet type, which is where you see that the accumulator end of the bet does most of the work when everything wins.
- Each way and place terms: each way doubles the stake and adds a place bet on every combination at a fraction of the odds. Standard UK terms are 1/4 odds for 2 or 3 places (5 to 7 runners, and most handicaps), and 1/5 odds for 3 or 4 places (8 or more runners), with bookmakers offering enhanced terms on big festivals.
- Stake entered as (advanced): switch from a per-bet unit stake to a total outlay, which is divided equally across all 4 bets (8 each way). Useful when you have a fixed GBP 10 or GBP 20 in mind for the whole bet.
- Rule 4 deduction (advanced): when a horse is withdrawn after you bet, bookmakers deduct a set number of pence in the pound from winnings (not stake) on that race. The scale runs from 5p for a 14/1 to 20/1 withdrawal up to 90p for an odds-on one; the calculator applies your chosen deduction to every winning selection, so use it when the withdrawal affects the whole bet.
- One-winner bonus (advanced): bookmakers rarely offer a one-winner bonus on a Trixie because it has no singles, so this option mainly matters for the Lucky family; it is here so you can model an offer if you are given one.
- All-winners bonus (advanced): a percentage added to total returns when every selection wins, typically 10% to 25% depending on the bookmaker and the size of the bet.
- Return on stake and maximum return (advanced): profit as a percentage of everything staked, and the return you would have seen if every selection had won at the odds entered. The maximum is a useful sanity check on whether the odds justify 4 stakes.
- Real settlements: bonuses, Rule 4 deductions and dead heats can all change actual returns, so check your bookmaker's terms. Please gamble responsibly: only bet what you can afford to lose. Free confidential support is available from GamCare on 0808 8020 133 or at gamcare.org.uk.
