Nesting season is the hard rule: cutting a hedge with active nests (roughly March-August) is an offence: the trade's rhythm is a tidy cut in early spring BEFORE nesting, then the main cut from late August/September: book those slots, not June. The tall-hedge economics run on a ratchet: a maintained 2m hedge costs GBP 7/m/yr forever: let it hit 4m and the one-off reduction costs 2-3 years of maintenance in one bill (plus the high-hedge complaint regime if it shades the neighbours: evergreen hedges over 2m can end up with the council ordering reduction at YOUR cost).
What The Hedge Cutting Calculator Works Out
- Annual cost: hedge length x the per-metre rate for its height, with a GBP 40 minimum callout, multiplied by the cuts a year. A maintained hedge under 1.5m costs about GBP 4 a metre, the standard 1.5-3m trim GBP 7, and an overgrown 3m-plus reduction GBP 14-plus, so a 12m suburban run comes to about GBP 170 a year kept in shape.
- Timing rules: cutting a hedge with active nests, roughly March to August, is an offence, so the trade's rhythm is a pre-nesting tidy in February or early March and the main cut from late August. Never cut leylandii into brown wood: it does not regrow.
- DIY and neighbour lines: a GBP 60-120 trimmer handles anything reachable from the ground; the professional sells platform work, sharp kit and the chipper. Overhang may be trimmed to your own boundary with the arisings offered back, and shared hedges are a split-the-cut conversation.
- Access (advanced): a hedge cut on one side only, or shared with a neighbour who does their side, costs about 30% less; a tall hedge needing platform or ladder work costs about 40% more, which is where the trade's injuries and insurance live.
- Minimum callout (advanced): the simple mode uses GBP 40; many gardeners charge GBP 50-80 for a short visit. A hedge of a few metres pays the floor rather than the per-metre rate.
- Green waste removal per cut (advanced): some quotes exclude taking the clippings away, charging GBP 20-50 a load. The same figure is applied to the DIY route if you have to pay to dispose of the clippings yourself.
- DIY trimmer cost and life (advanced): the price of a trimmer spread over the years it lasts, plus any disposal, gives the DIY annual cost. A GBP 90 corded trimmer over 5 years is GBP 18 a year; cordless models cost more and their batteries wear out sooner.
- Pro vs DIY over the period (advanced): both routes totalled over the years you choose, with the saving and the number of afternoons it buys you. Anything above ladder height tilts the answer back toward the professional.
- Let-it-go reduction bill (advanced): what a one-off overgrown reduction of your hedge would cost at GBP 14 a metre, expressed as years of ordinary maintenance. Evergreen hedges over 2m that block a neighbour's light can also end in the council ordering the reduction at your cost.
