Simple Skip Hire Size Calculator For 2026

Advanced options

Skips are sized in cubic yards: 2yd mini, 4yd midi (the bathroom/kitchen refit favourite), 6yd, 8yd builders' skip, 12yd maxi (light bulky waste only). Heavy materials (soil, rubble, hardcore) usually max out at 8 yards for lifting-weight reasons. A skip on the road needs a council permit, which the hire firm normally arranges.

What The Skip Hire Size Calculator Works Out

  • Waste volume: length x width x height of the pile in cubic metres, converted to the cubic yards Britain's skips are still sized in (1 m3 is about 1.3 yd3), with a bin-bag equivalent at the trade rule of 25 to 30 bags per yard.
  • Recommended skip: the smallest standard size the volume fits as a level load: 2 yd mini, 4 yd midi (the kitchen-and-bathroom workhorse), 6 yd, 8 yd builders' skip, 12 yd maxi. Order small and regret it: a second skip costs far more than one size up would have, and overloaded skips with plywood extensions are refusable at collection.
  • Guide price: typical UK hire including delivery, collection and disposal, from about GBP 90 to GBP 140 for a mini up to GBP 280 to GBP 400 for a maxi. Prices vary widely by region and with landfill tax.
  • Waste type (advanced): light mixed waste at roughly 200 kg per m3, mixed building waste at 500 kg and soil, rubble or hardcore at about 1,500 kg. Heavy waste hits lorry lifting limits long before it fills the walls, so it is capped at 8 yards and the 12-yarder is reserved for light bulky loads.
  • Margin (advanced): adds a percentage for the waste you have not yet generated or measured; 20% to 30% is realistic for a strip-out that is still under way.
  • Region, permit and hire period (advanced): London and the South East run around 40% above typical prices, the North and Midlands a little below. A skip on the public road needs a council permit (GBP 30 to GBP 70, arranged by the firm) and hire beyond the customary two weeks is charged per extra week.
  • Estimated weight (advanced): volume multiplied by the density of the waste type, flagged if it exceeds the usual 8 tonne lift limit.
  • Next size up (advanced): what going one size larger would add, usually GBP 40 to GBP 60, against the cost of a second skip if the pile grows.
  • Alternatives (advanced): 1-yard skip bags (about GBP 110 each including collection) suit small jobs and permit-free streets; man-and-van clearance at roughly GBP 45 per yard undercuts skips for single-room loads and does the labour; grab lorries handle bulk soil and rubble. Check the waste carrier licence whichever route you take, because fly-tipped waste is traced back to the customer.
