Gift Aid grosses up your donation by 25% at no cost to you, funded by the basic-rate tax you already paid: the one rule is you must have paid at least that much tax in the year (tick the box while paying no tax and HMRC bills YOU). Higher/additional-rate payers reclaim the extra 20/25% themselves via self-assessment or a tax-code call: unclaimed higher-rate relief is one of the biggest free-money piles in UK tax. Charity shop donations count too: sign up once and your donated jumble earns Gift Aid on its sale price.
What The Gift Aid Calculator Works Out
- Charity receives: your donation grossed up by 25%, because the charity reclaims the basic rate tax you already paid on the money. Every GBP 100 becomes GBP 125 at no cost to you; skipping the tick leaves the charity's quarter on the table.
- Your tax relief: basic rate donors get nothing extra, since the 25% to the charity is the relief. Higher and additional rate payers reclaim a further 20% or 25% of the gross gift themselves through self assessment or a tax code adjustment, and surveys find most never do.
- True cost to you: the donation minus any relief you reclaim. For a higher rate donor a GBP 100 gift costs GBP 75 and delivers GBP 125, a two-thirds subsidy hiding behind one tick and one line on a return.
- The one tripwire: the declaration asserts you have paid at least the reclaimed tax this year. A non-taxpayer who ticks the box receives HMRC's bill for the shortfall personally; the retired parent and the low-earning student are the classic cases.
- How often you give (advanced): turns a monthly or weekly standing order into annual totals for you and the charity, which is also the figure to put on a tax return.
- Donation needed for your target (advanced): works backwards from what you want the charity to end up with: divide by 1.25 to find the donation, then the true cost at your band.
- Extra relief from the allowance taper (advanced): between GBP 100,000 and GBP 125,140 of income the personal allowance is withdrawn at GBP 1 for every GBP 2. Gift Aid lowers income for this test, so each GBP 2 given restores GBP 1 of allowance taxed at 40%, an effective 60% relief that makes giving in that band worth planning.
- Have you paid enough tax (advanced): compares the tax you pay in the year with the 25% the charity reclaims on everything you Gift Aid, and shows the maximum you can safely tick. Carry-back elections can use last year's tax if this year's is short.
- Total relief share (advanced): how much of each pound the charity receives comes from tax relief rather than your pocket: 20% at basic rate, 40% at higher rate, 45% at additional rate, more in the taper zone.
- Other routes: payroll giving takes donations pre-tax with no reclaim needed at any band, charity shop sign-ups earn Gift Aid on the sale price of donated goods, and sponsorship pages apply it per sponsor when each ticks their own box.
