Typical UK figures: direct cremation around GBP 1,500, attended cremation around GBP 4,000, burial around GBP 5,500 (with wide regional variation, London highest). Funeral directors must publish standardised price lists; the estate normally pays, banks release funds for funeral bills before probate, and support exists for those on qualifying benefits.
What The Funeral Cost Calculator Works Out
- Typical base cost: the UK average for the type chosen: a basic attended cremation around GBP 4,000, a burial around GBP 5,500 before a plot in the expensive regions doubles it, and direct cremation (collection and cremation without a service) around GBP 1,500, the option that has grown fastest since it entered public awareness.
- Estimated total: the base plus your extras figure. Flowers, limousines, catering, notices, orders of service and eventually a headstone routinely add GBP 1,000 to GBP 3,000, which is why the two-line layout mirrors how the bills actually arrive.
- What the base includes: the funeral director's fees, a simple coffin, hearse and the cremation or burial fee. Directors must display standardised price lists for a defined basic funeral and crematoria must publish fees, so comparing two or three quotes is normal and rewarded: like-for-like quotes vary by four figures in the same town.
- Region (advanced): scales the base cost. London and the South East run far above the North, Scotland and Northern Ireland; the multipliers here are indicative (London roughly 30% above average, the North and Northern Ireland about 15% below).
- Wake and memorial (advanced): guests multiplied by catering per head (GBP 10 to GBP 25 a head for a buffet is typical), plus a headstone or memorial, which commonly costs GBP 1,000 to GBP 3,000 and is usually bought months later.
- Funeral Expenses Payment (advanced): the DWP pays the necessary burial or cremation fees in full plus up to GBP 1,000 towards other costs for people on qualifying benefits such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit. It is recoverable from the estate. The Child Funeral Fund covers fees for children's funerals in England.
- Left for the family or estate to find (advanced): the total minus any pre-paid plan, insurance or savings set aside and any DWP payment. The estate pays before any inheritance is distributed, and banks release funds directly to the funeral director on sight of an invoice and death certificate, even before probate. Pre-paid plans are now FCA-regulated.
- Saving by choosing direct cremation (advanced): your estimate against a direct cremation in the same region. The service increasingly becomes a memorial event held separately, at venue prices rather than funeral prices, with the ashes present. Nobody is obliged to use a funeral director at all.
