studios post finished work for 5-10 if you cannot collect
taster 1: beginners' course 6
tasters include 1-2: roughly half of beginner throws survive
open-studio access: 60-120 a month
clay by the bag plus firing by the piece or kilo
The honest expectation for a first wheel session: your pots will be wobbly, small and beloved, and roughly half of what beginners throw survives to the kiln: the GBP 45 buys the experience + usually 1-2 fired pieces (firing/postage for extras is the quiet add-on: ask upfront). Courses beat tasters for actually learning: 6 weeks of muscle memory vs one slippery evening: and the taster-course-membership ladder is deliberately priced to walk you up it: enjoy the walk, but know the stairs.
What The Pottery Class Calculator Works Out
- Cost: the format price multiplied by people (date-night sessions are priced per pair), plus extra pieces fired and glazed at about GBP 6.50 each. Wheel tasters run about GBP 45 for two hours, six-week beginners' courses GBP 160, paint-a-pot visits GBP 30 including the piece and date-night wheel sessions GBP 60 for two.
- What to expect honestly: first pots are wobbly, small and beloved, roughly half of beginner throws survive to the kiln, and finished work is collected three to six weeks later because glazed pieces need two firings. Wear clothes that can die.
- If it takes hold: studio memberships run GBP 60 to GBP 120 a month with clay and firing often on top. A wheel is GBP 400 to GBP 900 but the kiln at GBP 1,500-plus is the real barrier, so most home potters throw at home and pay a studio to fire.
- Firing and glazing per extra piece (advanced): the GBP 6.50 assumption made editable. Studios charge GBP 5 to GBP 8 a piece, or by the kilo for larger work; ask before you fall in love with six pots.
- Postage or collection trip (advanced): finished work is ready weeks later, so either a return trip or GBP 5 to GBP 10 of postage is part of the real cost.
- Sessions in the booking (advanced): one for a taster, six for a beginners' course. It drives the per-session card, which is where courses show their value against repeated tasters.
- Finished pieces you expect to keep (advanced): tasters usually include one or two fired pieces. Combined with any extra firing, it gives the cost per finished piece, which can be compared with a GBP 15 to GBP 25 potter's-market mug.
- Studio membership and clay per month (advanced): the monthly open-studio fee plus a materials budget. The membership-route card totals it per month and per year.
- Membership break-even (advanced): the monthly membership cost divided by your per-session class price gives the sessions a month at which the ceramics gym becomes cheaper than booking classes, usually two to three.
