Syrian hamsters are strictly solitary: housed together they fight, sometimes fatally. Modern welfare guidance wants far bigger cages than pet shops traditionally sold (80x50cm floor minimum, bigger is better), 15cm+ of burrowing substrate, and a wheel large enough (28cm for Syrians) that the back doesn't arch.
What The Hamster Cost Calculator Works Out
- First year: the setup level plus a year of running costs, typically GBP 400 to GBP 500 all-in. Welfare standards quietly revolutionised while the pet-shop shelf stood still: the barred starter cages and rainbow tubes are now considered cramped, replaced by 80cm-plus footprints, 15cm-plus of burrowing substrate and a 28cm wheel so the spine runs flat.
- Each year after: (food + bedding + vet fund) x 12, a couple of hundred pounds. Food goes as foraged scatter-feeding rather than a bowl; bedding follows the deep clean's rhythm.
- Over a 2-year life: setup plus two years of running costs. Syrians live about 2 to 2.5 years and dwarfs 1.5 to 2, which is why a small standing fund replaces insurance: premiums sit awkwardly against so short a lifespan.
- Lifespan (advanced): change the years used for the lifetime total; the card label updates.
- Number of hamsters (advanced): dwarf species sometimes tolerate same-sex pairs with a separation plan on standby; food scales with the count while bedding and the vet fund are per cage. Entering more than one Syrian triggers a warning, because Syrians housed together fight to injury or worse and each needs its own setup.
- Purchase fee (advanced): GBP 10 to GBP 25 from a shop or rescue, the smallest number in the story.
- Substrate depth (advanced): a proper 15cm-plus burrowing layer uses about half as much bedding again as a shallow one; this scales the bedding line.
- Enrichment and vet visits (advanced): an annual allowance for chews, hides and wheel replacement (DIY cardboard and toilet rolls outperform the plastic aisle), plus the number of vet visits you expect over its life at about GBP 45 each: wet tail in the young is a genuine emergency, tumours and dental issues come in the old.
- Pet-sitter days (advanced): someone to top up food and water while you are away, at about GBP 5 a day.
- Successive hamsters and the year-by-year table (advanced): the cost of keeping hamsters for as many years as you choose, buying the cage once and replacing the hamster at the end of each life, with a cumulative table. Nocturnality means the hamster's day starts at the child's bedtime, the mismatch behind most abandoned interest, so the cage belongs where evening life happens.
