Reusables assume a ~GBP 300 kit plus ~GBP 250 of washing over the period. The kit then costs nothing for a second child, which is where cloth's economics get decisive. Many councils run cloth nappy incentive schemes worth checking; a hybrid (cloth at home, disposables out and overnight) is the common real-world compromise.
What The Nappy Cost Calculator Works Out
- Total nappies: changes per day x 365 x years in nappies. Six a day for two and a half years is about 5,500 changes; newborns burn through ten or more a day while toddlers settle toward five, so six is an honest average across the arc.
- Disposables total: the nappy count multiplied by the price each. Supermarket own brands (about 8p) come to roughly GBP 450 over the period, mid-range (15p) over GBP 800 and premium brands (25p) past GBP 1,300. Own brands are perennial winners of the parenting forums' blind tests, so the brand experiment is the cheapest intervention in the subject.
- Reusables total: a kit of 20-odd pocket or all-in-one nappies (GBP 200 to GBP 400) plus washing at about a pound a week in electricity, water and detergent, roughly GBP 550 in all. Against mid-range disposables the crossover arrives within the first child.
- Your own price per disposable (advanced): use the exact price from your supermarket's bulk box or subscription instead of the three presets.
- Kit, washing and council incentive (advanced): edit the reusable assumptions directly. Many councils still run cloth nappy schemes knocking GBP 30 or so off the kit, and preloved kits sell for a fraction of new.
- Children who will use the kit (advanced): the second child inherits the kit and pays only for washing, which is where cloth's economics become unanswerable. The per-child and all-children cards show the effect.
- Wipes (advanced): about 3p a change for disposable wipes adds GBP 150 or more over the period; washable cloths at home are the stealth saving.
- Route comparison table (advanced): disposables, reusables and the common hybrid (cloth at home, disposables for nights, trips and grandparents, costed here at half the disposables) side by side with monthly figures. Modern cloth needs no soaking buckets: a dry pail, a 40 to 60 degree wash and liners for the unspeakable part. The size-up moment cures half of all leak crises and costs nothing.
